A short guide for the person who owns the place, not the person who set up the computer.

The three screens

Mise is one app that shows you a different thing depending on who signs in.

Till — the floor. Tables, orders, and taking money. Kitchen — the pass. Tickets appear the moment the till sends them. Manage — the office. Menu, staff, settings and the numbers.

If you are the owner or a manager you can switch between all three from the top right. Everyone else lands in the one their job needs.

Before your first service

Build the menu. Manage → Categories first (Starters, Mains, Drinks), then Manage → Items. An item needs a name, a price and a category; everything else is optional.

Add your tables. Manage → Tables. Group them into zones if the room has sections.

Add your staff. Manage → Staff. Each person gets a username and a PIN they type at the till. Give people the smallest role that lets them do their job — a waiter cannot change your prices.

Set up a printer (optional). Manage → Settings → Printers. You need the address from the printer's own self-test page. Press Test and paper should come out.

During service

Seat a table: Till → tap the table → how many guests → Open bill.

Take an order: tap items. If an item asks a question — size, extras — the till asks it. Add a note for the kitchen where it matters; allergy notes show up in a box the kitchen cannot miss.

Send it: press Send to the kitchen. It appears on the pass instantly.

In the kitchen: tap an item to move it queued → cooking → ready. Press All ready when the whole ticket is plated, then Clear from the pass once it has gone out. Tickets turn amber then red as they age.

Run out of something: Manage → Items → switch In stock off. It shows as 86 on the till and cannot be ordered.

Settle: press Settle bill. Choose how they are paying. For cash, type what they handed you and Mise works out the change. Part payments are fine — the bill closes itself when it is covered.

A discount: the % button on the bill. You have to give a reason, and it is recorded against your name.

At the end of the day

Close your shift: Till → the green button at the top → count the drawer and type the total. Mise tells you what should be there and whether you are short. Then it shows what the shift came to.

The numbers: Manage → Reports. Takings, what sold, who served it, and the shape of the day by hour. Export CSV hands it to a bookkeeper.

What Mise will not let you do

Some things are refused on purpose:

  • The bill total cannot be edited. It is worked out on the server from the items, your tax and your service charge.
  • A discount larger than the bill.
  • Removing your last owner account, or switching it off.
  • A manager resetting an owner's PIN.
  • Taking money against a cancelled bill.

Prices and history

Changing a price today never changes a bill from yesterday. Every order keeps its own copy of what things were called and what they cost.
